Back to cutting out bad metal.

It seemed that it would be a few weeks until the tank was ready, and in the mean time, my freshly stripped front of the frame was sitting outside in a yard, unprotected from the elements.

I decided to bring the chassis down to our house in Wicklow to get started on repairing the rusted section in the front.

Unfortunately, the bare metal at the front now has ugly surface rust as a result of being outside unprotected for a while, but don’t worry, a quick and light sandblasting would clean that up perfectly again. Or, using a wire brush on the end of an electric drill…

As I mentioned, we moved house, so in our new home, I have a garage! Wohoo!

Its perfect for keeping the frame in and working on in the evenings, and eventually of course, it’ll make a nice home for the car when its all back together.

Below, you can see pics of the garage, and of my brother Maurice and I beginning to cut away the bad metal.

The more we cut the more rust we find. I discovered that the metal on the drivers side (left side) holding the bottom of the front frame extension to the bottom of the crossmember is practically non-existant. Also, the front cross member’s front and back vertical walls are very rotten at the lower edge (if you know what I mean?).

There is going to be a lot of newly fabricated metal going in here.

Check out some close up pics of the rust damage:
