Repairing the front of the frame – part 1

OK, this is my favourite part of the restoration - fixing the rusted front section of the frame! Sean O'Brien did the fabrication and welding for me in this area, and you will see in the next few sets of pictures, he did a fantastic job.

We inspected the front of the frame after sandblasting, and decided that the metal plate at the bottom of the front frame extension was too weak to be repaired. This plate is what the steering rack mounting points are welded to, so obviously you don't want any weakness in this area.

This first set of pictures show how the plate was carefully cut out, leaving the steering rack mounts behind. Before any cutting was done, Sean tack welded supports to the steering mounts and other parts of the front frame extension, so that they would not move during the repair work.
